Genuinely offline
Download a language pair once. After that it translates with the radio off: aeroplane mode, no roaming, no Wi-Fi.

No tapping a button and waiting on a round trip. Words appear as you write them, because the model is right there.
Rewriting and tutor notes
Rewrite a phrase formal, casual or shorter, and ask why it reads the way it does. Uses Apple Intelligence, so it needs an iPhone 15 Pro or newer on iOS 26.
Speak it, hear it
Tap Speak and say the phrase in the language you picked, instead of typing it. Tap Listen to have either side read aloud with the voices on your phone. Both work offline.
History that stays put
Everything you translate is saved on the device and searchable. Star the phrases you keep needing.

Every feature, no paywall, no "pro" tier, no ads. The App Store is full of translators that gate the useful half.
Your words never leave your phone
Not a policy promise you have to take on trust, a consequence of how the app is built. There is no server to send anything to.

Questions
Is it really free?
Yes. No subscription, no in-app purchases, no ads, no usage limit. There is no server bill to fund, which is exactly why this is possible.
How good is the translation?
It uses Apple's on-device translation models, the same engine behind the system Translate app. For everyday travel and conversation it's strong. It is not a substitute for a professional translator on legal or medical text.
Which languages?
Twenty-three at launch, including English, Spanish, French, German, Italian, Portuguese, Chinese, Japanese, Korean, Hindi, Arabic, Russian, Polish, Dutch, Turkish, Thai, Vietnamese, Indonesian and Ukrainian.
What do rewriting and tutor notes need?
Apple Intelligence, which means an iPhone 15 Pro or newer running iOS 26. Offlingo downloads no language model of its own. On other iPhones those two controls are simply not shown, and translation works exactly the same.
Does it need iOS 18?
Yes. The on-device translation framework it's built on arrived in iOS 18.
Is there an Android version?
Not currently. The app is built directly on Apple's on-device frameworks, which don't have a direct equivalent.
